Oklahoma City Thunder Launch Title Defense with Nail-Biting Double Overtime Triumph

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in action

The Thunder star joined the Thunder back in 2019.

The Thunder's star player scored the winning baskets deep into a second overtime period as the defending champions started their NBA title defense with a narrow victory over the visiting Rockets.

Last season's MVP scored 35 points, including two clutch free throws with just 2.3 seconds remaining in double OT, securing the titleholders a positive start.

The Rockets' big man top-scored with 39 points and also connected on a career-high five three-pointers.

But Chet Holmgren, who contributed 28 points, was instrumental alongside match-winner Gilgeous-Alexander.

"Determination and defence," SGA said of their showing. "We know that when we execute on defence we give ourselves a opportunity no matter what's going on—makes, misses, fortune or bad luck. We did sufficient defence to get the win. We're still shaking off rust, but it's a good start."

Before the game, Oklahoma's championship banner was raised at their arena, while the players were awarded their championship rings.

The Thunder defeated the Indiana Pacers in last season's championship series. It was their first title since the team relocated in 2008 to Oklahoma City from Seattle, who had won the 1979 title.

The Pacers will have the opportunity to secure some early revenge on Friday when they face Oklahoma, while the Rockets are back on court on the same day at the Pistons.

Elsewhere, a huge performance of 43 points, 12 boards and nine dimes from the Slovenian star was not enough to prevent his current team the Lakers from falling to a 119-109 loss against the Golden State Warriors.

Jimmy Butler scored 31 points and Golden State's sharpshooter added 23 points for the visiting Warriors.

The Lakers were missing the NBA's all-time leading scorer LeBron James as he recovers from a back issue.
