Caelan Doris Secures Spot in Ireland Selection While Joe McCarthy Left Out
Returning manager Andy Farrell has named skipper Caelan Doris in his Irish team for the autumn Tests, however lock McCarthy is absent.
Doris, who has not played since undergoing a shoulder operation in the start of May, has come back to provincial training, with doubts lingering whether he will be fit to face New Zealand in the US on 1 November.
Lock McCarthy, on the other hand, was not considered after not recovering from the foot injury he sustained during the first British and Irish Lions match against the Wallabies in the summer.
Ulster forward Cormac Izuchukwu and Munster wing Nash also miss out due to fitness concerns, while number 15 Hugo Keenan was previously excluded after undergoing a hip operation after the Lions tour.
Leinster prop Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the sole uncapped member in the 34-man group, however the Irish Rugby Football Union states uncapped provincial duo Edogbo and Gleeson and once-capped Connacht winger Shayne Bolton will travel to Chicago as "reserves".
Following facing the All Blacks at the Chicago stadium in a repeat of their previous meeting, Ireland will play Japan, the Wallabies and world champions South Africa in Dublin.
"It's an exciting group to the squad and there's an opportunity for the more experienced members and for the newcomers on the recent tour to Georgia and the Lobos," commented the coach, who returns to national team duties after a break to coach the Lions tour to the southern hemisphere.
In a mostly experienced selection, the Dublin club's Prendergast and Munster's Crowley will once again vie for the first-choice number 10 position. The fly-half role is remains available, with Prendergast and Crowley set to play against each other for the first occasion in Saturday's URC match at Croke Park.
Ciaran Frawley is the third number 10 chosen with Farrell opting against selecting Leinster's Byrne.
At number 9, Farrell has selected British and Irish Lion Jamison Gibson-Park and Casey, who led the national side to the summer Test victories over the Lelos and Portugal. There is also a return for Connacht's Caolin Blade, chosen to club-mate Ben Murphy.
Robbie Henshaw, Aki, Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey represent an veteran cohort of midfield options. Jamie Osborne is a further choice in the midfield, but the youngster is also a leading candidate to cover for the full-back at number 15.
Outside backs James Lowe, Hansen, O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are named. The winger shone on his national team debut over the summer with a brace each in the wins over Georgia and the Lobos.
McCarthy is the only new name in the Ireland pack. The loose-head prop has been in two of his province's three United Rugby Championship matches this season and featured in Ireland A's defeat by the English in Bristol earlier this year.
McCarthy was included in interim boss Paul O'Connell's summer selection, but did not receive a international appearance.
Munster lock Ahern, who earned his first two caps in those matches, is kept in the squad, while veteran Northern province lock Iain Henderson returns after missing the summer tour.
Jack Conan, who started all three Lions matches during the tour, is set to deputise for the captain if the captain does not regain full fitness in time to face the All Blacks.
The Ireland squad will assemble in the capital on the start of the week before traveling to the US on the following day.
