UN Removes Sanctions on Syria's Leader Before Presidential Visit

Placeholder Syrian President

United Nations Security Council members voted in favour to an American proposal removing restrictions on Syria's leader Ahmed al-Sharaa prior to his Washington trip the coming week.

He became provisional head of state after leading a rebel offensive that removed the former president in the final month of 2024, ending over a decade of internal conflict.

Washington's ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz declared the global body transmitted "a strong political signal" that recognised Syria was in "a new era" after Assad's removal.

He had been subject to global penalties while commanding the Islamist group the HTS movement, once connected to al-Qaeda. Washington eliminated HTS from a list of global extremist entities this past July.

More Penalties Removed

The UN also removed penalties against the Syrian interior official Anas Khattab.

The Syrian diplomatic chief welcomed the removal of the penalties, posting on social media: "Syria expresses its appreciation toward America and to friendly nations for their support the Syrian nation and citizens."

Forthcoming Presidential Visit

The Syrian leader's Washington trip on Monday follows President Trump remarked that Sharaa demonstrated "substantial headway" working toward stability to the war-torn country.

Subsequent to their talks, the US president stated Sharaa had "a real shot to unify the country".

The pair met for the first time during May, when Trump visited Riyadh while traveling through the Middle East.

Subsequent to that discussion, the US president described the Syrian as a "strong individual" having a "formative history".

The HTS organization he led operated as the terrorist network's partner inside the country prior to breaking relations in 2016.

Prior United States Journey

This week's diplomatic engagement will not be the president's debut journey to the United States in the current year. In September, he emerged as the initial Syrian president to present to the global assembly in New York for nearly six decades.

Throughout his presentation, he stated the country had been "regaining its deserved status within the global community" while showing support with the people of Gaza.
