The Legendary Prunella Scales: From Fawlty Towers to Great Canal Journeys
Prunella Scales, who passed away at the age of 93, was regarded as among Britain's most brilliant comedic performers.
Although an extensive and respected career on stage and screen, her legacy will forever be linked as the unforgettable Sybil Fawlty in the classic 1970s television series, Fawlty Towers.
It was Sybil's mission throughout her existence to keep tabs on her husband Basil described as a "stick insect" - played by John Cleese - between cigarette-fuelled phone conversations with her companion Audrey.
It fell to her to placate guests who had been yelled at, completely overlooked or, occasionally, throttled by Basil when in one of his more manic moods.
Her unforgettable cackle, extraordinary hairstyle and ferocious temper were components of a meticulously crafted persona that stands as a humorous triumph.
And while many actors would have distanced themselves from too close an association with a single role, Scales consistently voiced her delight in participating of the Fawlty Towers experience.
Early Life and Career Beginnings
Prunella Margaret Rumney Illingworth came into the world near Guildford on June 22nd, 1932.
She belonged to a household profoundly passionate about the theatre - her mother being, Catherine Scales, a former actor who'd abandoned her career for family life.
Bright and bookish, after wartime evacuation to England's Lake District, Prunella studied at Moira House educational institution in the coastal town of Eastbourne.
In 1949, she earned a scholarship to the prestigious Old Vic drama school and - two years later - obtained a role as a stage management assistant.
This decision angered of her former headmistress in Eastbourne, who had wished she would seek admission to Cambridge University and wrote to the theatre to tell them so.
At drama school, Scales had been thought of as a junior character actor instead of an obvious Juliet.
"We all wanted to look like Audrey Hepburn," she subsequently informed her chronicler, "but I wasn't attractive and nobody fancied me."
Young Prunella concealed her privileged background, aware that directors were beginning to look for authentic working-class realism in their actors.
Nevertheless she began acquiring minor parts in plays, and, during preparations for a part at the Connaught Theatre in Worthing, she met Andrew Sachs, who would later star as Manuel the Spanish server, in the famous series.
There was an early television appearance in 1952, as the character Lydia Bennet in a BBC production of Pride and Prejudice, which featured Peter Cushing - more famous for his horror film performances - as Mr Darcy.
Her initial film appearances came a year later - in lighthearted romance, the film Laxdale Hall, and David Lean's production Hobson's Choice, alongside the renowned Charles Laughton.
Throughout the late 1950s and early 1960s, she maintained constant employment - appearing on stage, film and television, featuring a brief stint as transport worker, character Eileen Hughes, in Coronation Street.
She also met colleague Timothy West.
After what Prunella described as "a gentle courtship involving crosswords and candies", they got together, and wed in 1963.
Career Milestones and Defining Characters
Her major television opportunity arrived through Marriage Lines, a comedy program about a newly married couple, George and Kate Starling.
Scales performed alongside actor Richard Briers, at that time a major celebrity in TV humor. The show proved hugely popular and ran for five years.
Subsequently arrived Fawlty Towers, which propelled her to iconic status.
John Cleese and his spouse at the time, Connie Booth, had submitted the first script of Fawlty Towers to the BBC.
Actress Bridget Turner had been approached to play the Sybil role but she declined the part and Scales tried out for the character.
She later remembered that Cleese was a hard taskmaster.
"John, quite rightly, was extremely rigorous about learning the script, and if you didn't, he could get quite cross, which was fair enough."
Merely twelve installments were ever made.
The first series, which debuted in 1975, didn't immediately attract massive viewership but, as it continued, its hilarious mix of absurd pratfalls and embarrassing situations increased in appeal.
Scales thought hard about how to play Sybil Fawlty, and decided that her character's upbringing had to be inferior to Basil's social standing.
At first, John Cleese and his wife were unsure about the treatment.
"After witnessing the initial read-through," recalled Scales, "they were sold on the idea."
In subsequent years, she was, all too often, requested to portray "dragons" and "old bags" when she desired elegant characters.
But when asked about her career pinnacle, Scales had no hesitation in selecting Sybil Fawlty.
"The role presented challenges," she insisted, "but I'm still proud of it." She believed it assisted in bringing the paying public into theaters.
"I like to think that if the public have seen you in one thing they'll come and see you in another," she said.
Later Career and Personal Life
After Fawlty Towers, Scales continued to work in the television industry, including a stint as character Elizabeth Mapp in ITV's Mapp and Lucia.
Her voice was also regularly heard on audio broadcasts, notably the BBC Radio 4 sitcom, which later transitioned to TV, and Ladies of Letters, with actress Patricia Routledge, which evolved into a staple of the program Woman's Hour.
Scales appeared in two significant royal characters; as Queen Elizabeth II in the BBC production of Alan Bennett's A Question of Attribution, and as the monarch Queen Victoria in a solo performance that she performed 400 times.
She once received a letter from a royal protection officer who admitted that when Scales came on stage, he stood up.
"It was a knee-jerk reaction," she explained. "The experience delighted me."
During 1995, she began starring as Dotty Turnbull in television commercials for supermarket giant Tesco - which compensated her partially with shopping credits.
The campaign, which ran for nine years, was identified as the primary reason in propelling it to market leadership in the mid-nineties.
Scales later came in for some gentle criticism for taking part in the Tesco adverts, when she supported an initiative to stop local shops closing in her area of London.
Among her most accomplished roles appeared in the production Breaking the Code, the film about the Bletchley Park wartime codebreakers.
She portrays Alan Turing's mother, who embodies a society that treated homosexual acts as a crime, an attitude that eventually led to his death.
