The UK government has included 11 new nations to its public warning register concerning the threats of industrial alcohol contamination from tainted spirits.

This updated travel guidance features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after reports of "a worldwide rise in the incidence of confirmed occurrences" of methanol poisoning.

Just a few weeks ago, authorities had previously added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing register, following several serious events such as the tragic death of half a dozen travelers in Laos in 2024.

Tourists are being warned that even minimal doses of toxic alcohol can result in permanent eye damage or fatality within 12–48 hrs.

Exactly what is Toxic Alcohol and How is it Employed?

Toxic alcohol is a toxic substance typically utilized in antifreeze, car cleaning liquid, and thinner. It is not intended for human consumption.

While it is inherently formed during the manufacture of alcoholic drinks, licensed producers bring it down to minimal, harmless amounts for human consumption through the refining procedure.

However in various destinations, it is illegally mixed into spirits to cut costs, and as it is flavorless and smell-free, it is impossible to detect.

Official Advice for Travellers

Foreign Office minister Hamish Falconer emphasized that every traveler should be aware of the symptoms of toxic alcohol poisoning.

"When you are consuming alcohol in foreign countries, choose well-known venues and steer clear of homemade alcohol or complimentary drinks," the official advised.

"In case something seems unusual, for example a fatigue that's far more intense than normal or vision problems – seek medical attention immediately."

The full list of nations noted as presenting a danger of industrial alcohol contamination presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
