The US-based enterprise Waymo has revealed that its driverless vehicles will be on offer for hire on London's thoroughfares beginning next year.

London Becomes First European City for Self-Driving Ride-Hailing.

The UK capital will emerge as the inaugural European city to host an self-driving taxi service, akin to those currently familiar in multiple US cities and four other American locations employing Waymo's cutting-edge platform.

Initial Trials to Start with Human Specialists.

Waymo stated that its vehicles are currently heading to London and will commence driving on the city's roads in the near future with experienced operators in control.

Waymo – originally established as a derivative from Google's self-driving car project and belonging to the larger corporate umbrella – indicated it would expand activities and work closely with the government transport body and the city's mobility organization to acquire the necessary licenses to offer completely driverless rides by 2026.

Further companies, such as Uber and the British technology firm Wayve, have also revealed their own strategies to trial driverless cabs in the city next year.

This is in response to the government officials announcing it would speed up regulations enabling real-world tests to proceed before regulation supporting autonomous cars becomes law in full.

Waymo already has ties to Britain after launching its inaugural European research base in Oxford in 2019.

The company is also launching operations in Tokyo using JLR EVs, marking its only other current operation outside the United States.

“Evidence confirms how to effectively grow completely driverless ride-hailing, and we can’t wait to extend the advantages of our platform to the Britain,” said Tekedra Mawakana, explaining that the system was “enhancing transport security and travel more inclusive”.

Waymo introduced its autonomous cabs in 2020 and presently reports it has served in excess of 10 million customers in the US.
